This August sabbatical offering is an informal, live talk* I gave in response to a question someone: Is everything a Zen teacher does a “teaching”? How do you know? This led to discussion of other topics as well, related to having a formal relationship with a Zen teacher – What does it mean? What does it look like? Why would someone want this? (*Most of my episodes are produced specifically for podcast listeners.)

It’s August and I’m on sabbatical from my Zen center, Bright Way Zen. I also make the Zen Studies Podcast a little lighter in August, so this episode is a talk I gave a couple of months ago at Bright Way in response to question submitted by a Sangha member. Periodically, I have folks write down questions and submit them anonymously, and then I draw questions out of an envelope and answer them without preparation. If you’re a regular listener, you probably know I like to be organized and prepared. However, a different kind of discussion ensues when things are more spontaneous. I hope you’ll enjoy!
